If you're new to Melbourne and you're still trying to figure your way around Melbourne, check out these tips to survive!!

 

 

Getting Around

 

Trams run frequently (~2 – 3 minutes during peak hour; ~4 – 8 minutes non-peak) in the CBD.

 

If you're headed out to the suburbs, you can get almost anywhere (including a 5 – 10 minute walk) with a combination of trains and buses. Check the Metlink website for a journey planner – www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au.

Metlink tickets can be purchased on board trams (with coins), most convenience stores and major train stations. Vline tickets can be purchased at major train stations.

 

Melbourne is progressively making the switch to a new ticketing system called myki. You can choose to use either Metcard or myki to travel on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses. The existing Metcard ticketing system can still be used and will run alongside myki until December 2012. 

 

Getting around by foot in Melbourne is an amazing experience in itself when you're not in a hurry as you are bound to discover niche cafes and sweet spots in the city.

 

 

Getting Connected

 

Most mobile phone plans offer you a minimum spend price (eg. $29, $49, etc.) comes bundled with a certain amount of credit that you can use each month. For example, signing up for a $29 plan means you only pay that amount for $200 worth of credit.


Popular mobile providers amongst students include 3 Mobile, Vodafone, Optus and Telstra.

 

Most Internet Data plans also employ the same structure like mobile phones, but choices tend to vary more. Check out providers like TPG , iiNet and Internode for wired deals and all the above mobile phone providers also offer wireless portable broadband.

 

 

Getting Fed

 

Melbourne is melting pot of food from all over the world. The CBD is full of eateries for you to discover, featuring both local and international cuisines.

Getting Out

 

If you want to get out on the weekend, Melbourne’s cultural sophistication will have enough to keep you coming back for more.

 

The CBD is a hotspot for music ranging from indie gigs to cool jazz haunts. And if you’re looking for something quieter, the southern end of the city (towards Flinders Street Station) is home to many of the country’s finest art and display galleries.

 

For the coffee connoisseur in you, discovering Melbourne’s endless café scene will keep you busy for some time.

 

St. Kilda is also worth checking out, with almost everything for someone ranging from food, cafes to bric’ & brac’. The 15 minute tram ride is definitely worth the journey as there’s so much to discover is this beautiful little suburb. Also check out Luna Park, one of the oldest theme parks in Australia is located here.
